Facilities

With continuous effort to establish facilities and laboratories that will be useful for instruction, research, and mechanical engineering services, the Department of Mechanical Engineering maintains several laboratories and a manufacturing center

Laboratories

Power Laboratory

  • As mechanical systems and the operations of which are mostly dynamic and complex, advanced instrumentation and control techniques are required for precise data acquisition, diagnostics, simulation, design, failure analysis, and prediction. This laboratory also conducts testing and calbration of devices and materials for industrial purposes. As thermal science is one of the major fields of mechanical engineering, a power laboratory is a necessity to the department. It houses several apparatuses and systems involved in the generation, transmission, and utilization of heat and mechanical power for purposes of instruction, research, and services such as engine testing of automotive fuels and testing of pipes and fittings.

Emerson Laboratory

  • Donated by the Emerson Climate Technologies Inc. this laboratory contains HVAC and Refrigeration trainers and models of the systems components and a number of hardware and software required for a more precise design and evaluation of HVACR units. (ERDT)

Machine Design Laboratory

  • A laboratory dedicated to machine design. The facility houses both hardware and software tools to complete the entire process of machine design, beginning form design concept, to Computer aided design, to analysis, rapid prototyping and testing. This research laboratory houses unique equipment that allows for reverse engineering, design modifications and improvement, strength and dynamic analysis, design verification and design for manufacture. (ERDT)

Biomechanics Laboratory

  • The laboratory is involved in the research and development of computational tools for analysing changes in forms and for studying human motion. It is equipped with a motion capture system and x-ray film scanner. Current research includes kinetics and statistical studies of human spinal configuration, biomorphometrics and gait analysis. (ERDT)

Instrumentation, Robotics, Control Systems Laboratory

  • This laboratory enables students to use advance instrumentation and control techniques required for precise data acquisition, system diagnostics, simulation, design, and failure analysis and prediction. This laboratory also conducts testing and calibration of devices and materials for the industry. (ERDT)

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Laboratory

  • Houses a 4-station CIM Cell set-up used to simulate production and manufacturing systems. It serves as an educational laboratory for students to understand different aspects of manufacturing such as quality control, optimization and automation. It is also functioning as research/design laboratory in flexible manufacturing system (FMS) with the use of two small scale CNC machines and different robotics arms.  (ERDT)

Manufacturing and Design Center

  • Housed in the German Yia II Hall (IE/ME Building), the UPME Manufacturing and Design Center came into being to serve the following needs: instruction of students and trainees in the use of computer-controlled and manually-controlled machine tools and other equipment dedicated to metals and materials processing and handling, provide fabrication services for clients of the department, college and university, and a research center for product design and prototyping. The center is home to industrial-grade state-of-the-art machinery such as numerically-controlled machine tools as well as conventional machine tools, modern metal cutting and welding equipment, rapid-prototyping machines, and a computer center, among others. (ERDT)

Computational Mechanics Laboratory

  •  This laboratory is equipped with computer units and processors and a number of software, most of which are sponsored by the developers.  (ERDT)

M.E. Shop and Fabrication Facility

  • This facility familiarizes the students to both conventional and modern manufacturing and machining processes, which will be useful in formulating engineering solutions to industry operations. This is also a venue for both students and researchers to build prototypes and test, evaluate and implement theoretical ideas and system designs. (ERDT)

Metrology and Mensuration Laboratory

  • Is a teaching lab where students are exposed to different measurement instrumentations. Experiments give students a hands-on feel of the different principles and theories that they learn in class.

Vehicle Research and Testing Laboratory

  • The UP Vehicle Research and Testing Laboratory (UP VRTL) which was inaugurated last Aug. 14, 2008, is the first ever vehicle research and testing laboratory here in the country. The facility was set up in line with the passage of the Biofuels Act, making one of center’s primary functions is to conduct performance tests on alternative fuels. The laboratory can also assess available fuel-saving and emission-reducing products and devices. In addition to testing, the VRTL is also being used for undergraduate instruction and graduate research of the UP Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME). The facility is currently equipped with a chassis dynamometer, fuel flow meter with fuel conditioning, air mass flow meter, and an exhaust gas analyzer. The UP VRTL is being implemented by four government agencies, namely UP, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC). It is located at the DME Laboratory in Melchor Hall, UP Diliman Campus.
