To be a world-class institution of Mechanical Engineering serving foremost the needs of our country, the Philippines

Consistently produce top quality Mechanical Engineering graduates;
Continually develop new knowledge and undertake progressive research and development that will contribute to the industrial development of the nation;
Provide technical expertise to industry and strengthen linkages and partnerships with other institutions.

Our Logo

The Department's logo symbolizes the meshing of classical and modern mechanical engineering: two gears in mesh, one representing numerical methods, and one representing classical analytical methods used in mechanical engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to produce graduates that, in 3-5 years after graduation:

  1. Seek out leadership roles in their respective field of professional practice;
  2. Engage in the creation of opportunities and services that foster inclusive and sustainable socio-economic growth;
  3. Actively pursue excellence in research, development, and innovation in mechanical engineering and allied fields and;
  4. Sustain their motivation for lifelong cultivation of personal and professional skills.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to produce students that, upon graduation:

  1. Utilize working knowledge of the technical fundamentals of mechanical engineering to identify and solve problems systematically and in systemic terms;
  2. Communicate effectively through various media;
  3. Work in teams effectively;
  4. Improve personal and professional skills;
  5. Conceive, design, implement, operate, and maintain mechanical engineering systems;
  6. Generate mechanical engineering solutions that comply with Philippine and global professional standards and ethics and;
  7. Produce relevant and progressive research to expand the current knowledge and understanding in mechanical engineering

The Department takes pride in its research and pursuit of academic excellence through its different research thrusts*: Computational Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, Dynamics and Vibration, Energy and Thermal Systems, Fluid Mechanics.

*Formalization of thrusts ongoing as of 15 November 2023

The department's degree programs excel in four main fields of study: Thermals and Fluids, Product Design and Manufacturing, Mechanics of Materials, and Dynamics and Control.

Mechanical Engineering in the University of the Philippines began in January 10, 1916 when the UP Board of Regents approved the curricula leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In the following academic year, 1916-1917, the degree program was officially opened, and the Department was first headed by Prof. Herman W. Reynolds from the University of California. The Department graduated its first batch of students in 1920, as the second oldest program in the College.
